Help Out OCA - Greater Seattle (OCA-GS) is a non-profit organization. As such it is dependent on the community for its support. While there are many organizations competing for funding and many worthy causes OCA-GS is one of a few that serves the special needs of the local Asian Pacific American community in general and the Chinese American community specifically. That role is advocacy and the protection of civil rights. While there was great progress made in the civil rights of all people of color in the 1960s and 70s there has been a noticeable erosion of those hard won advances in the last few years. There is a growing distrust of all Asians in the United States. Some of that can be traced to 9/11, some to the outflow of work associated with new off-shore ventures and still more to the perception of the growing power of nations of eastern Asia and specifically the fear of competition with China. This poses special problem for Americans of Asian origins. Though often called the model minority, they are still looked upon by the American community as outsiders even when their American family heritage can be traced back over a hundred years. It is this separation from acceptance that leaves Asians in need of a voice. The United States is still the land of opportunity and the model for others when it comes to the ideals of democracy that does not mean it is perfect. It is up to everyone to continue the struggle toward the ideal. It is in this realm that OCA-GS fights for the rights of Asian Pacific Americans. It is for this reason that we ask for your support.
