WSU Harrasment Concerns

Lead Story

Issued February 2005

After two Asian American female students were repeatedly harassed by several white males on the Washington State University, Pullman campus, two of four males were identified and questioned by the WSU Police and released upon further investigation. On 2/08/2005, the investigation closed with no action taken. The WSU Student Conduct Office says it is reviewing the incident.

Ever since the early 1990s, when an East Indian female student committed suicide as a result of harassment, there have been attacks on the WSU minority communities. Though student leaders, student activists, faculty and staff have fought for many years to avoid such events little progress seems to have been made. As in the past, the current incident has met with administrative denial, a lack of action against the perpetrators and consequences for the victims.

In spite of the harassments having been carried out through the past year at the Multicultural Student Center, the University characterized them as isolated pranks and the perpetrators as victims of female hypersensitivity. referred to as  “model-athletes”, the perpetrators have not only avoided punishment, but have received support, which can only serve to encourage further support.
